Fledgling crows spend a week on the ground before they start flying. Usually the parents are right nearby watching over them. Occasionally a person assumes they are hurt, even though it's just a natural part of their life cycle, and... well, you see what happens.

Nothing compared to the Eurasian Jay, though! Not as big as crows, but twice as protective. My sister once tried to help a chick, which had fallen out of the nest and they pecked her so hard, she almost needed stitches! Also, compared to crows, they're more like stealth-bombers. They don't say a word, they just attack immediately. At least around these parts.
