GLOBAL NEWS - JUNE 27, 2008 - Beavers trapped using cruel conibear traps is a failure of leadership at the University of New Brunswick. UNB even refused the offer of pipes and hardware by the Friends of the UNB Woodlot to implement a humane beaver management program.

All beaver activity stopped after December 2006 near the Ducks Unlimited Corbett Brook Marsh in the UNB Woodlot -- a stone's throw from the new Home Depot. It was not until the fall 2007 when NB Department of Natural Resources released information that 24 beavers were killed using conibear body-gripping kill traps between Nov. 10 -- Dec. 31, 2006.

Large humane and veterinary organizations do not support the use of conibear traps by municipalities to solve their beaver problems. While beavers can be killed instantaneous, others are not. You can't predict where the beaver is going to get caught on their body. Killing beavers is only a short-term solution and the public has a growing impatience with their cities who don't implement non-lethal beaver management program (e.g. West Vancouver, Sacramento, Gatineau Park QE, several US States).

The 330 Conibear is one of the most humane traps out there. Death occurs in seconds, not 24 minutes. The trap usually catches the animal on the neck and shuts with tremendous force causing either cervical dislocation or rapid asphyxiation.

Killing beaver may be a short term solution in some cases where there are major streams/corridors for other beaver to readily move into unoccupied habitat; however, in many cases the area will not be repopulated for many years, if at all. This depends on many factors including: land use after trapping (removal of building material & food sources), local beaver populations, and accessibility (large streams/creeks closeby).

It's amazing the different tune that's sung when the beavers are setting up shop in their back yard and their basement gets flooded. Then it becomes "OMG get them yucky creatures off my property"! Their agenda is not what it appears to be. They do not care about beavers or anything it is the colour of money they adore not tress etc. The grand scheme of things means less than nothing to the Fake Left as long as they do well in their life and times.
