When I went to learn about reloading steel shot, there were no videos on youtube... Kinda sucked, had to do alot of reading, so I hope this helps you trying to get into steel. I buy the same shot load @ $28-$39 a box Winch or Blackcloud... I reload that load @ Approx ~ $8 a box... Worth it ;-)

This is a Mec Steelmaster

Haven't measured the PSI and Velocity of the load yet... I'll post that if I get it done.
First and so far only shot of the season was a left-to-right mallard @ 40-50yds, bird was dead before he hit the water, Pulled 11 BB pellets out of his two breast steaks... Pretty good pattern LOL

Recipe from Lyman Shot Shell Reloading Handbook 4th Edition

Primer: CCI 209
Powder: Alliant Blue Dot 40grs
BPGS (Ballistics Products Gas Seal)
BP Ranger Plus Wad (BP Multi-Metal Now replaces the Ranger... It's an old recipe)
1 1/4oz BB Steel Shot
30grs BP Shot Buffer
One .030" Overshot card

  • Which way does the BPGS go in the shell?

  • @AdmiralGST

The concave side of the seal goes in first, resting against the powder, leaving the wad to sit securely on the ridged side.

  • What would i need to do to the recipe if i loaded #1 or 2 shot

  • @hunterk750

The recipe stays exactly the same regardless of the size shot you use... All you must ensure is that you use 1.25oz of shot... The pressure load is based on the weight the gas will have to push out the barrel, as long as the weight remains the same, the size of the pellets doesn't matter!!!

  • were you reloading Xperts?

  • @lsmerrill

Just using Xperts hulls. These are last years emptys I picked up after each hunt. This shot recipe is not the same used by the factory to load Xperts 3.5"...

  • where did you buy the steel shot? i cant find any place where i can order steel shot online

  • Nice press. I use one for my 10 gauge shells. Alliant steel powder performs much better in cold temperatures than blue dot powder.

  • when all would you a gas seal in shotshell load? I know that you are using it here in this steel load but what about with slugs? Also do you know when you might be using a buffer other than this?

  • I used to load them for under 10 dollars a box but BPI now charges the same amount for 10 lbs of steel as 100lbs

  • can you please explain the main difference in steel and lead shot? Why do you need the extra supplies?

  • Blue dot aint really worth much unless you are from the south. It is pretty useless in the north here. It will work ok at 65 deg. Here is all I need to know 12ga 3" 47 grns of Alliant steel powder, Vp65 and one ounce of steel is without a doubt the hardest hitting load I ever made. I shoot turkeys with em!! I like them better than lead. They run abt 1700 fps and I put the 3 1/2 loader away. If you buy your shoot in bulk and shop around for that powder you will run under 10 bucks a box!!

  • I like it very well made if u be so kind to point me the right direction for a 3" recipe P/S thanks

  • what press are u using and how much did it cost?
