Elvis On Tour
Four complete concerts were filmed and recorded by MGM. The fact, that all the tapes belong to MGM, surely doesn't make it easy for official releases by Sony/BMG. The only one so far is the April 18th San Antonio concert on Close up. The bootleg releases have quite improved over the years. It all started with the Vicky label, almost everything was there, but in modest quality, then within the last years some surprising releases were issued, excellent sound, but still mono. Now Madison starts the stereo campaign, exciting, but still not perfect, because of editing mistakes and missing parts. Let's hope for some official releases before 2012.

The Richmond Concert
The April 10, 1972 concert in Richmond was not that perfect, compared to some of the other three shows. That might've been the reason why no song was included completely in the documentary. After four strong versions from 'See See Rider' to 'You Gave Me A Mountain', the quality of the songs goes down a bit. Elvis starts kidding around, not caring too much about the cameras. Everyone at stage seems to loose concentration, but by the second half of "Bridge" they got it together again. And then - what a version of 'It's Over'! In my opinion it's one of the best renditions of the song that I might have heard, including this really cool intro by Elvis. Vicky had it as a bonus on their Complete On Tour Session Vol. 1 in enhanced quality, and Mystery Train put it as a bonus on "All That I Am", 'cause there sure is something special about it. What else is worth mentioning? 'Suspicious Minds', 'For The Good Times', 'I Can't Stop Loving You', yeah the second half of the concert has already New York standard, climaxing in 'An American Trilogy'.

The Madison Release
Again the "Master Of The Art" delivers a well taken care of package. The liner notes lead you through all the special moments in this concert. But...what about the sound? Since no bootleg label ever tried to improve the rather average sound of the Vicky release Carry Me Back To Old Virginia, this version doesn't have any competition. Unfortunately, comparing this release with their latest one Greensboro Revolution!, the crystal and clear sound is gone. The high frequencies are missing. Usually a professional label like Madison should have been able to remaster the sound to the same high standard, if anybody with a equalizer can do at home.
The Madison label is an expert about artwork, but surely isn't an expert about editing or sound-improvement.

No offense...-), the stereo sound is still exciting.

  • @greenhithemafia

I don´t get it either. They made BILLIONS of $ since Elvis passed away. Still, the have so much great stuff in the vaults.

  • the king at his best .

  • Elvis on Tour will be released to DVD and Blu Ray in the fall of 2010. I just hope it will be the entire 1972 15 city tour

  • NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN lyrics correction: It's "So I headed for Las Vegas, only made it out to needles" (Needles Nevada is the reference, NOT Virginia) :-) BUT AWESOME AUDIO YAY :-)

  • hey! great uploads,

i collect all the concerts, as others have said, i wish Elvis Enterprises would realease more material, such as Thats The Way it Was, theres bound to be more unseen footage from that, also you would have thought they would have filmed him in 69.

One other concert i wish they would 'do up' & release is the Madison Square garden shows. Apart from the countless Dvds about his life etc.. there is only a few concert videos available such as 68 comback, aloha & CBS special.

  • even thou we were lucky that ttwii was re-done with extras songs and a bit of elvis on tour in the last couple of years, and 2 years ago i was able to get new footage of elvis on tour, why do we have to go and get bootleg copies when mgm vaults RCA, BMG have so much stock still in the can why cant they start releasing it. I would love to see a whole concert of the april 72 tour instead of bits here and here. wake up ,MGM we elvis fans are still around and will be for a long time.

  • As usual, a great performance by a great performer!

  • I never get tired listening to the King. Simply awesome.
