These products derived from plants, give lots calories for cheap energy which can lead to weight gain. Meals rich in gluten, which is a high protein extract and the carbohydrates has been removed from the gluten, are used to assist in boosting the protein levels. Without using expensive ingredients from animal sources, the most commonly used product from plants to serve this purpose is a corn gluten meal. The shapes in the food is made by wheat gluten. Shapes such as: chunks, cuts, shreds, bites, slices, flakes, or to thicken gravy. In many instances, among the poor quality foods are those which contain vegetable proteins.
Preservatives are not ingredients in dog food

A Recipe for dog food which contain low carbohydrates, those which substitute grains for green peas, potatoes, as well as other types of starchy vegetables are of no particular benefit to your pets. Not including dogs which have allergies to grains and low carbohydrate diets, which are dry, can also be high in fat, this can cause your dog to gain weight, as well as lack nutrients. Ingredients in dog food are filled with additives and preservatives.

Manufacturers will need to make sure that packaged dog foods remain edible with shipping or storage will still have long shelf life. Natural preservatives or synthetics are used to preserve the fats and are sprayed on the ingredients in dog food.
