California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform has launched a campaign to end the misuse of psychoactive drugs in California nursing homes.

This is part 1 of a 3 part video series

"Stop Drugging Our Elderly"

The Campaign to Stop Chemical Restraints in Nursing Homes

Overdrugging is a leading cause of elder abuse in nursing homes. The campaign seeks to end nursing home drugging of residents through misuse of dangerous antipsychotic drugs, such as Haldol, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Risperdal. The FDA has issued black box warnings stating that these drugs greatly increase the risk of death of elders with dementia. The video series gives advocacy tips on informed consent, a resident's right to refuse drugs, alternatives to drugs, and laws governing unnecessary drugs in nursing homes.

In addition to the videos, CANHR has published a guide on this subject, Toxic Medicine: What You Should Know to Fight the Misuse of Psychoactive Drugs in California Nursing Homes.

For more information please visit our websites,

& to learn more about the effects of;
Haldol, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, and other dangerous antipsychotic drugs containing black box warnings.

  • I've been refusing psych drugs for my mother and someone filed a complaint of abuse against me with adult protective services for not allowing one particular drug that increases her risk of stroke- another one they tried to order would have seriously affected her diabetes. It's just plain crazy-I'm trying to protect her from these brain damaging substances. The right to make an informed decision and the right to refuse a drug have been completely ignored. Is there a similar organization in Iowa?
