Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA

please note: the first twenty seconds of "Oh Kee Pah Ceremony" are unfortunately missing from the video.

  • So... I just read that the Okipa Ceremony as performed by the Mandan and witnessed by George Catlin was brutal. They would slit their skin, insert boards underneath their muscles and then be suspended from them, sometimes adding weights to their legs to increase the pain. They would hang until they lost consciousness and then be lowered, resuscitated and declared men.

But I guess Trey got the idea from the film 'A Man Named Horse,' which depicts a Lakota version of the ceremony.

    Go Cactus!
