Hey everyone,

This 2nd installment of my video blog takes place in Los Angeles where, this week, my friend and collaborator Ryan Spraker and I are writing songs for my new album. A friend had told me a few times about a club in South Central L.A. called The Barnyard. During the week it's a salvage yard but on the weekends it transforms in to a down home blues club, with local musicians, both professional and amateur, sharing the stage. We happened to have this Saturday night free so we headed down.

As soon as we walked in, the warm atmosphere (fueled by a trash can fire since it was a cold night) reminded me so much of the clubs I used to play in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The band was killer and every musician who got on stage had their own style and sound. It was just a party atmosphere and I immediately felt right at home.

We only intended to have a few beers and enjoy the music but pretty soon we were asked if we were musicians and, when we said yes, we were asked to play. I pulled out a few old tricks from my Mississippi playbook and played versions of Willie Cobbs' "You Don't Love Me" and O.V. Wright's "You're Gonna Make Me Cry", with Ryan playing bass and the rest of the house band behind me. I think you can tell from this video that we just had a blast and that the audience did too. I really miss being able to play in those kinds of places and I know that whenever I'm back on the west coast on a weekend I'll be back at The Barnyard! I hope you guys enjoy this clip as much as I enjoyed that night.

-Eli

  • Hey Eli...on the sideways shot here, the good life is starting to show...ha ha...no problems just saying... :-)....still enjoyed the music, thanks for posting. I never get to see these events , without your posts...:-)

  • Sound is very bad on the video....But the perform is great !!!

  • i listen it like the black keys xD

  • As for the first tune...the only version I ever cared for was the one I used to hear in those fabled 60s-- rendered by Junior Wells if memory serves. Bravo on YGMMC, Eli. You smoke and ain't no joke. Too bad some hifi recording apparatus didn't do your performance the respect it deserved.

  • @Kenjh71 I understand, but it's disappointing as the previous video blog was so great.

  • @zarbran , I am sure Eli agree it's not high quality sound, but on the other hand this is about sharing the moment and not about making a bootleg...

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing. Sounds great! I've been to the Barnyard, and it is the closest thing to a juke joint that I know of on the west coast.

  • loud music plus iphone footage... if you can't hang than I suggest you take it up with Stevie Jobs.

  • The sound quality of the video is really bad, pretty much unwatchable unless you want a headache. :(
