A very short video of a chance encounter with the gun from USS IOWA's #2 turret on a Sunday afternoon drive. As I explain on the video- I came across this forgotten piece of tape while reviewing some videos for possible DVD archiving. I immediately knew what I was looking at when the railcar's load caught my eye. I turned on the camera and panned back and forth but the battery was depleted and quickly shut off. I offer it as a minor image that those who were there or those curious enough to care and who would want to see this piece of history can see it. Consider it a piece of forensic evidence that has never been offered anywhere.

  • what did they end up doing with the barrel?

  • Directly quoted from Wikipedia-

"Turret Two was trained forward with its own mechanism after the explosion, and superficial repairs were conducted. All the related repair pieces were stored inside the turret and the turret was sealed shut. The turret was never put back into operation,"

  • dude get the text out of the way

  • dude- that's why there's a piece at the end that says- Without interruption. I wanted to express my thought on my chance encounter. Thanks for your input.

  • Not the barrel from the Iowa. It wasnt damaged as the explosion blew out from the open breech. All the damage occurred in the gun house, hoist equipment and in the flats below. This was a spare barrel or perhaps an old test barrel from Dahlgren sent up for scrapping.

  • This is not the barrel from Turret 2, USS IOWA. It's definitely a battleship rifle. Likely a Mark 7. And definitelyl a piece of history.

  • This was scrapped.

  • what happend to the gun barrel , the uss iowa battle ship is soon to be a museum , it would be nice if the could have the barrel,, please contact me
