They were banned because the NBA back then required players to wear predominantly white shoes and as you can see the Air Jordan 1s were black and red. The NBA fined Michael $5000 every game he wore them, but Nike payed his fine every time. They eventually sold them to the public using the genius marketing idea that they were so great they were illegal.
