This video was filmed on "Tito", a South American sea-lion pup that got stranded on May 29th, 2011, at La Herradura beach, Chorrillos in Lima City, Peru. The sea was very violent and his mother has just been murdered. Coming in and out among the waves, surfers saved him from being killed by fishermen. Unfortunately and unknowingly, "Tito" was taken to the zoo where he is still, upset and depressed by the closure.
ORCA, a ngo in Peru, has requested temporary custody to rehabilitate, get back "Tito" into shape, diagnose and perform a complete health status and determine the course of his return to the sea. There is still time to rehabilitate him, but each day passes can depress and weaken further. "Tito" is kept in isolation to avoid infecting other animals, since he was born in freedom, however, not having a proper management for a sea-lion on his age, "Tito" could never see the ocean again.
The everlasting paperwork and little will from zoo personnel keeps him where he is now. This sea-lion is a sentinel of the ocean, and his health tells us how the health of the marine environment is, hence its importance in revising him under rehabilitation and return him safely to its habitat.
A life is important to the ocean. 80% of cases die stranded due to human aggression. However, ORCA has a successful recovery of 85% from viable animals, and there are more than 35 sea-lions that have returned to sea after being cared for in our rehabilitation center.
