I knew that Nelson liked a lot of modern music but was unaware about his appreciation for the Beatles. Have you watched his 1957 appearance on 'The Danny Thomas Show" where he performed a very funny rock and roll parody? The clip is posted on YouTube. Lorraine
Nelson Ackerman Eddy (1901 - 1967) was, by every account, one of the true class acts of the business. He always said that he wanted to "go on singing till I drop," and that's literally what happened. He suffered a stroke onstage during a nightclub performance and died in hospital the next day.
Unlike most of his contemporaries, he genuinely liked rock, thought the Beatles were "turning out some lovely stuff," and said that, if he were younger, just starting out, he would form a rock band.
Nelson is funny and so sweet and genuniely humble. I love how he acknowledges the contributions of his nightclub partners-accompanist Ted Paxson and soprano Gale Sherwood.
Nelson Eddy still sounded great in the late states of his career. And if anything, Nelson and Jeanette McDonald's recordings so more impressive now than they did originally.
Liked the Beatles? He get my vote!! You don't like the Beatles music, something is wrong with you..
