Combined, oil and gas companies hold leases to nearly 68 million acres of federal land and waters that they are not producing oil and gas.

The oil companies are wharehousing the leases to 68 million acres of federally-owned, oil-rich land in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico that they ALREADY hold, which have 14 years of domestic oil production, and they have NO intention of drilling on them! There is no incentive for the oil companies to increase drilling--it brings the oil prices down. Period.

So, the modus operandi is to acquire the rights to drill on as much land as possible in order to manipulate the supply, and as the demand increases, so does the price.

Today, The Minerals Management Service is considering offering more leases to the oil and gas industry in a 73-million-acre area of Arctic Ocean waters off Alaska's northern coast.

These waters are the lifeblood of Pacific walruses, polar bears, endangered bowhead whales, sea birds, and many other special creatures that are already struggling in the face of climate change. There is no safe way to drill there. Studies show that even seismic testing of potential drilling sites has an impact on marine animals. The MMS' own research found that crude oil and petroleum spills are inevitable, and they predict a 40% chance of a major oil spill.

There is a petition to be signed to the MMS and Obama to stop the sale of the 73 million acres in Alaska. It is on the wilderness website.

@mustangsusanshelby As far as oil goes, we can use less of it. You don't HAVE to have that suv or hummer when you can have a hybrid or electric car, you don't HAVE to drive when it's a 5 minute walk. turning off appliances when you're not using them or voting for clean energy proposals goes a long way.

There are other options. don't be fooled into thinking they'll never work or something

boycotting them helps pressure them to change or die. They DO have other competitors, many of which are investing in cleaner technology and helping to develop clean fuels.

It's not a perfect plan, but it shows that people want change. And when the number of people adds up, change comes
