A tribute to University at Buffalo President Emeritus William R. Greiner, who died on Dec. 21, 2009 at age 75. Greiner was a member of the UB family for 42 years: He served 13 years as the university's 13th president, was a long-time Law School faculty member and UB's first provost.
Professor Greiners presidency was distinguished by a period of unprecedented growth at UB. His extensive list of major accomplishments included the expansion of the universitys research enterprise, including the creation of major research institutes and recruitment of world-class faculty, solidifying UB's place as a top-flight research university. He transformed student life on campus, including the construction of five student apartment complexes; established the university as a leading international educational institution with a worldwide network of UB alumni; spearheaded UB's drive to Division I athletics; oversaw the most ambitious fundraising campaign in university history, and fostered a new cultural presence of the university in the community, including the opening of the Center for the Arts.
