A professional driver explains why proper tire pressure is so important -- and how it can save you money at the gas pump. It's from Ford Motor Company's Driving Skills for Life program, which is designed to help young drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60% of teen vehicle crashes, hazard recognition, vehicle handling, space management and speed management.

  • Hi nozionist666, good comment. Just remember though that whilst under inflated tyres do not grip as well as higher and correctly inflated tryes, if you over inflate then then you do lose grip.

A lot of drivers tend to add more pressure than the reccomended amount on high performance cars. It is important to have higher pressures for higher speeds and faster steering response and cornering. But you do lose a little traction in the process. It's all about finding the right balance.

  • My last set of tires were set to placard pressure and they wore more on the shoulders than the centre. That is UNDERinflation. The front tires scrubbed sidewalls while cornering.I could have pulled off the front tires. Now they are halfway between recommended pressure and sidewall max. If you think grip gets worse with high pressures then and show the world the proof with a link to some data (not anecdotal evidence) comparing grip to pressure, all the way to sidewall max.

  • Another thing worth mentioning (that Im suprised this guy didnt) is that you should check your tyre temperature when they are cold. ie: Dont check them when youve been driving around for half an hour or whatever.

Best time to do it is in the morning before as you leave (or before - if possible) your house.

  • A good resource for heat's effects on tire pressure would be Ayrton Senna's final race as his tyres cooled down, resulting in his car lowering and scraping along the ground
