Here's something a little different & a definate 1st for me.

This is southbound WO45 slowly making its way south down the A&WP Sub. The train is passing through Auburn, Al while spraying the ROW with a form of poison that will kill the vegitation. The modified boxcar has been fitted with several spray arms operated by three people that control the direction of the spray pattern via swing arms. The grey boxcar is a product of the Asplundh company that specializes in vegetation management.

Enjoy!

  • what is the point for that

  • @storm24awesome

Routene track maintnance to keep the vegitation from overtaking the right of way. Spraying is much cheaper and faster than having a fleet of workers with gloves, chain saws & weed eaters constantly working every track mile keeping the plants at bay.

  • Wow i never noticed a spray train before.

This was definatly a first for me as well.

  • Very cool!

  • Nice video, Hoolg! Usually on the NS here they have a weed spaying high-rail truck that does this. I can't recall seeing an actual train doing it so cool shot!

  • Really cool, but definitely something you want to stand back to see!

  • I hope it doesn't kill the trees.

  • The point is to kill weeds shrubs trees or any other plant life that would otherwise overtake the right of way. Roots a can completely destroy the road bed, and when a rail way has thousands of miles of row it would be quite impractical for them to go out and do it by hand. That is exactly why people should not trespass on railway property. They are an industry. Many chemicals are spilled leaked or sprayed along them rails.
