Kinyatta, I just learned of your dad's passing from this utube video..so sorry. Storm King is one of my favs to this day. RIP Gary, Eric Gale, Grover and all the other CTI brothers & sisters who are no longer with us.
I was down to Dad's house a few months before he passed. He was so proud of you doing drum corps arrangements. Dad and I belonged to a drum corps as kids in Middletown, NY. The corps kept us kids causght in the claws of a tough neighborhood off the streets and out of trouble. God Bless.
Everytime I am down, I watch this video. Gary was a special friend and a hell of a musician! He did not have an easy life. God Bless you Gary. Vinny - The Past Tells
I remember taking Gary and his Mom to Gary's audition at Juliard in NYC around 1966. I had this big old convertable and we stuck his bull bass, case and all in the back seat with the top down.
Now you have the beat up convertable with a young black guy, a young white guy and this old black lady riding through Manhattan with the top down, hair flying and a Bass riding in the back seat. Yea, we got some looks lol. - Good times.
Gary and I used to play music on my front porch as kids (Gary on Bass, me on Guitar). Gary called me out of the blue a few years ago and invited me to his pad in PA. Had a wonderful visit. Gary passed away a month later. God Bless you my special friend - Vinny Smith
I was lucky/blessed enough to tag along with my dad, who was working on a jazz recording session in the mid-70's.Gary King was the bassist, and he played his old Guild semi-hollow-body bass. While the musicians were on a break, I touched that thing once, and the room shook. Dad came in with a scowl, so I lit out of there.
He did some incredible low tuning, before 5-and 6-string basses; he even did plucked harmonics with string bends. The jazz bass players know; he was as badass as Jaco.
