Hang on. Those boxed ones sound like C. That first fork he hits in the air sounds like a B. But when he puts them together I hear an E. So .. do they create this or is my speaker funny?

Why is it that only if you have placed the sounding tuning fork on solid ground will it produce a greater amplitude than when it is held in the hand?

The wooden boxes act as a sound chamber to amplify the sound from the tuning fork. It's like stretching and plucking a guitar string in mid air where you hear very little sound. Put that string on a guitar and pluck it and music results. (If you know how to play the guitar.)
