There are swaths of White Americans still relatively uncomfortable with African Americans in positions (political) power. More to the point race plays a role in people's aversion to Obama not necessarily because out and out they hate black people but rather they don't trust or believe he deserves to be president.
The problem for Obama is that, given his age, biography and the seemingly relative ease with which he has ascended, his success just gets to people. He is a vessel for all their pent up angst against what they see as the alleged favorable treatment that being black affords due to "liberal bias" and its accursed affirmative action policies.
These are the people who have a few discreet boxes for African Americans (ghetto/hood, entertainer, preacher man, pimp, athlete, single-mom, etc.) that are understood and accepted. These people also have a sense of history and while they may not acknowledge it, were often witnesses to and fully aware of the rabid racism of pre-civil rights America.
It comes down to this: "How can we trust someone who comes from a group we previously defined by very limited boundaries (dancin', preachin', ballin') and give him access to the most powerful job in the world? We've always had the power and we resent them having it and what they could with it, especially against us."
That's why the celebrity thing works. It devalues and diminishes Obama to the fast talkin' Black guy. Can't trust that. In his biography, they don't see bootstraps they see affirmative action. In his remarkable defeat of Clinton they see "white guilt" and the usurping of the proper hierarchy. For PUMAs and the rest it's all about the "uppity negro" who needs to know his place (since policy wise they're on the same side being former Clinton supporters). The irony is that the founding principles of America created the possibilities for a Barack Obama (I mean it is a democracy right?), the America these people supposedly so love and want to protect. This really isn't about changing policies for a lot of people it's about keeping power in the hands of "good" White Americans who deserve it more (Paging Geraldine Ferraro..).

@zILAAA This is a long time later... but I am appalled that the first time you were proud to be an American was because of words and promises from a new president. Have you ever studied our history or realized the sacrifices our country and people have made for a greater good. Leave if you don't like your country. Is patriotism dead? Do you even salute the flag?

I don't know, we need a president we have one, if you're fit for the job people will want you to have the job. I don't even hear or hear about white people judging Mr. Obama because he's president! It might be because i'm in canada, who knows. But my point he's a man born in the U.S. he has brains and talent and a passion for people and politics, that's why in my opinion he's been voted President of the states.

is it just me are are there black racist overtones towards white people all over the inauguration. i think what omama fails to recognize is white people put him in office and can easily take him out. his true colors are beginning to show towards his favoritism towards the muslims.

As farm as i know, Obama kept talking about fixing the economy crysis and helping the US Getting Over it A.S.A.P, but u got the point right, exactly, the people who actually got hit by the crysis are the ones who are going to blame Obama for not getting their stuff back which is actually their fault and nobody could ever get them back.

Negative, he policies have been up for debate already. He is a liberal, do you know what they do? They throw money at problems, this is not good when you economy is shit. The bailout is not working, the new bailout will not work, and a stimulus will not work. Banks got us into this mess, an inexperienced senator will not get us out of it. By the way, I haven't felt a pinch. Idiot people buying houses they couldn't afford and banks loaning it to them are the ones to blame. Not any president.
