A hunting retriever needs to learn to come to both sides when heeling, and to be able to be sent from both sides as well.
Teaching a dog to comfortably leave and return to either side takes lots of repetition in order for the dog to be comfortable from either way.

The next couple of days I will show you a variety of ways that this can be done. Food can be used initially in this exercise because we do want him to see which hand is out and to come to that side, so targeting the hand out and having him come all the way in for it is o.k. in teaching this from the beginning. This will transfer to just your hand.

Today's video just shows how you can get in many repetitions of the dog just having fun retrieving, but at the same time learning through repetition that retrieves are basically to the side of you that you are sending him from and never to the opposite extreme in repetition.

The board, which your dog has learned through earlier lessons, will basically give him a consistent parameter to be in and tommorrow I will show you how to cut that down a bit so that you can even refine it tighter. Part 2 is tommorrow.

The off-leash control in this video has been acquired through the training with our 'Sit Means Sit Collar' which can be found at http://www.sitmeanssit.com
