2012
is it going to happen?
will it happen?
how could it happen?
tell me what you think!
will the world really end?
heres your answer
no
The whole thing began because the Mayan Long-Count calendar (which is not even the common Mayan calendar the Mayans actually used) will arrive at the end of a Long Count, and begin a new one.

In some Mayan cultures at the time, this meant that the world would enter a 'new age'.

'New Age' is a product of astrology, not astronomy. The Mayans paid a lot of attention to the Winter Solstice (that is why the date used is Dec. 21, 2012). Their common year -- in their real calendar, not the Long Count -- begins on the day of the winter solstice. Just like it did in most northern European civilizations, until the Christian church imposed its calendar.

The Long Count ends (as it was intended to) on the year that the winter solstice crosses the Galactic equator (but it is not in line with the Galactic centre -- it can't be). Thus a 'new age'.

In our 'western civilization', we pay more attention to the position of the Equinox (the point that marks the position of the Sun on the first day of Spring for the northern hemisphere), and to its position relative to the constellations.

Since the precession period is 25,800 years and there are 12 'houses' on the zodiac (there are really 13 constellations, but don't tell the astrologers, they don't want to be confused with facts), then we get a new age every 2150 years on average.

A little over 2000 years ago, we entered the Age of Pisces (fish). A few decades ago, it was "... the dawning of the Age of Aquarius" (from a popular song by the group 5th dimension), as the point is moving into the constellation of the water bearer (Aquarius).

Some people started to make predictions that would confirm the Mayan new age. Hoaxers (people who just enjoy fooling others) decided to get into the act and make up lots of nonsense and tie it in to the same date.

None (zero, nada, ziltch) of the predictions that I have seen so far make any sense. In fact, very few of them are based on any evidence or have any scientific basis. Most are simply impossible (like the sun lining up with the Galactic centre).
