From Luxmore Hut to Iris Burn.
This section is by far the most spectacular and gruelling part of the Challenge. Although the overall ascent is only an additional 400m, the amount of times you go up and down surpasses the 1100m ascent from the Control Gates to Luxmore Hut. There are also 97 zig-zags to contend with from Luxmore Hut through to Iris Burn Hut.
Although race conditions were perfect, runners were still exposed to the elements. Race day commenced at 6 degrees celsius for a 6am start. On the spur and along the ridge towards Forest Burn & Hanging Valley Shelters, the wind factor meant that temperatures were minus celsius. I could not find my gloves in my bag when the time required, leaving me with frost bite on my fingers.
All things being equal, this was hardly a glitch in enjoying the race. Once past Hanging Valley Shelter, I knew that the next 8km were going to be mostly down hill, along with circulation returning back to my finger tips.
