This is Chapter 1 of 2 and shows you how to thermal form Kydex into a gun holster. However, if you're not a "gunny," this tutorial will still show you an easy way to work with Kydex.

Total cost- about $10
Total Project time- about 2 hrs

  • When you wrap the kydex in the cloth, do you wet the cloth?

I'd think it would help it form quicker and would prevent the hot kydex from warping the frame of the pistol.

  • @migkillertwo

The process in this video will not damage or warp a real gun- A toy gun, maybe. The plastic on real guns has a melting point over 500 deg F and you're only heating the Kydex to between 350 and 400 deg F. Your gun will get hotter from firing it than from the heated Kydex. Also heat transfer from the Kydex to the gun is minimal. However, don't use a heat gun to heat the Kydex directly on the gun, this may cause frame damage. I don't think it's necessary to wet the breather cloth.

  • One thing I found--if you have a Food Saver vacuum sealer, you don't need to wrap the piece, and the vacuum is very strong. Biggest problem I've had so far is that it can pull the kydex out of alignment as it seals. I made a twin mag pouch it did that to. But, if you hold the pieces used to mold the kydex, it does a pretty good job of keeping stuff in alignment.

Thanks for the info on the food saver. I was wondering how that word work out. Also thanks for the tips on the alignment issues.

  • I have a sig sauer P250 .40 cal I am going to use this process to make a IWB holster. I've researched a lot of designs, but I really like the simplicity of yours. Thank you!

Good luck with the project. If you do a video, create a video response so we can see how it went. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.

  • The vacuum is pure genius!

Kydex isn't really a commonly used item in the home. It's used more in the automotive, firearm, and aviation industry. I doubt the local hardware store would carry it but you never know. I got mine from a plastics distributor close to my home. You might be able to find a distributor close to where you live that sells it; otherwise you'll probably have to have it shipped to you.

Sounds like a fund project to do with your dad. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • @TheProjectJunkie1

Hmm. well anyway, thx a bunch for this series. I think I might be able to start making belt and IWB holsters and mag carriers for all my family's guns with my dad soon. The MacGyver vacuum-packing was a really good idea.

Does any hardware store sell kydex or do I need to get that mailed to me?

  • @migkillertwo

If you cook it too long it does, but if you only do it for the 2-3 min the smell is hardly noticeable. In these videos I did the heating while my wife my was out of the house and when she got home she said she couldn't smell anything.
