After the National party and the New Zealand First party formed a coalition, the government has had to re-evaluate its economic reforms. This report examines the dilemmas that still face New Zealanders today. A proportional voting system has only enhanced the climate of instability. On the campaign trail, our reporter talks to both Winston Peters of the New Zealand First party and the current Prime Minister, Jim Bolger, of the National party. At a televised debate, Peters betrays personal animosity by brushing Bolger's hand from his shoulder. Having resigned from the previous government, Peters wants to become the first Maori PM and is determined to attack the economic reforms he once promoted. Handsome and charismatic, he is supported by the elderly and all those who suffered from cutbacks in welfare. Bolger meanwhile denies that there is poverty in NZ and talks dryly of NZ's "extraordinary progress". Our reporter meets a family of 6 living in one room in a refuge, a farmer's family, an entrepreneurial businessman and mountaineer, Sir Edmund Hillary to discuss their view of NZ's future. Comprehensive survey of NZ's political and economic quest.
