On the morning of January 1st, 2010, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God and the 43rd World Day of Peace, Pope Benedict XVI presided at Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.

In his homily the Holy Father stressed the theme of God's face and the faces of men, reading the biblical narrative as a progressive revelation of Gods visage, which reaches its full manifestation in Jesus Christ.

And then he offered a striking image: (INSERT PAPA) "Among the many types of icons of the Virgin Mary in the Byzantine tradition, said Pope Benedict, there is one called, tenderness, which portrays the child Jesus with his face pressed - cheek to cheek to that of the Mother.
