Damned hot stuff. Watch it full frame and full blast if your speakers can handle it. This is St. James Infirmary the way Van Morrison wished he could sing it.

  • Art Hodes is the piano player. I'd need to research most of the rest, but I knew Art and that AIN'T him singing! Sidney Bechet played various clarinets and lead the band. could possibly be Satch on trumpet.

  • Never claimed is was him singing. It's Fred Moore who also performs drums. Here are the rest.

    CORNET: Bill Davison

    SAXOPHONE: Sidney Bechet

    BASS: George Foster

  • I've played this vid like 92329 times. I don't care what Van Morrison tries to do when he covers something. Art Hodes burns on this thing.

  • So glad you enjoy this. That's what it's here for.

  • @shrdlu7 To my knowledge, Bechet never played with Omer Simeon, at least not on record (he played with Al Nicholas, Ed Hall, Buster Bailey, Mezzrow, Bob Wilber, Bill Reinhardt a.s.o.)

  • The vocal is by the drummer Freddie Moore. I especially liked Bechet's fill-ins during the vocal and then his imperious very hot solo

  • So good, thanks!

  • Edwin Jarvis, my man, Sidney Bechet almost exclusively played soprano sax and was the very best. There are people in this world who mistakenly believe that Kenny G. plays soprano sax, he does but he doesn't make any music on it and Coltrane played soprano sax but he couldn't hold a candle to the great Sidney Bechet especially when he would get together with some of the greats like Omer Simeon.

  • thanks for posting this. art hodes is my drummer rick hodes' grandfather! i've always wanted to check out his grandfather's music- this is great.

  • Wikipedia has an interesting entry for this folk song that became a jazz standard..

  • Hot stuff! Thanks, laceup.

Yup, Freddy Moore is the vocalist.
