The spotted salamander is a mole salamander which spends most of its life underground eating worms, centipedes, spiders, crickets and more. Every spring it makes the journal to a vernal pool (seasonal wetland) to breed. After fertilization, the female will produce an egg mass which consists of 30 to 250 eggs. The eggs hatch a spotted salamander larvae frolic in the vernal pool eating mosquitoes and other insects. In a few short weeks the larvae emerge from the pool as an adult and becomes a land dwelling animal. For more information check out www.ovpp.org
