In Scotland, known as "Land of the Brave", Open University invited Jung Chang to the Edinburgh lectures to talk about her book 'Mao: the Unknown Story.' Lorraine Hunter explains why.

[Lorraine Hunter, Open University Representative]:
"Doctor Chang is an honorary graduate of the Open University and so a friend of the Open University and obviously well known for her books "Wild Swans" and "Understanding Mao."

Jung Chang describes the courage needed to survive the horrors of living under Mao's dictatorship.

[Jung Chang, Author]:
"That year Mao launched the violent Cultural Revolution and all around me were tremendous violence and atrocities which just went against my nature. I saw teachers being subject to abuse, being beaten up and I also heard that the gardener of our school, who made our school really beautiful, was beaten to death! And I just hated all that!"

Earlier on Dr. Chang talked to us about her books being banned in China.

[Jung Chang, Author]:
"So personally, I think this is something really, really regrettable. I feel that as China is under open-door policy I hope that Chinas media could be more open, there are still a lot more things to be done. Also in respect of Chinese people learning about their own history, there are so many things to be done."

But why is there such tight information control in China?

[Jung Chang, Author]:
"I think it could be there are many bad things left from Maos time."

Jung Chang and her husband, Jon Halliday, took 12 years to write the book. It has sold over one million copies worldwide.
