Dancers mass for navel maneuvers

The belly is an amazingly communicative body part.

Etched with a six-pack, it embodies strength. In women, it's an unrelenting icon of fertility.

It's also the focal point of the belly dance, that swaying, swishing Middle Eastern import, which has been part of the Fremont Fair since the event began 35 years ago.

"We had maybe five people, but it got bigger and bigger, especially in the last three or four years," said Billion Belly March organizer Delilah Flynn. "This year we have close to 150."

This troop is organized by my old friend Delilah

of visionary dance in Seattle.

She's a sweet lady, who helps all those dancers enjoy themselves with confidence. In 2006 I attended the afterparty for the dancers, and the flood of good will between the participants was a great joy to witness.
