A Union Pacific Maintenance of Way ballast train, led by EMD SD70M's #3821 & 4962, heads east out of Oroville yard after a fresh crew unties and inspects the train and power. Shortly before the train enters the main at CP F205 (Mitchell Ave.) the UP dispatcher, Helen, is heard over the scanner giving conductor Bishop a slow order around milepost 216. This train will continue to the quarry at Elsey (CP F219) to be loaded. Once loaded, the power will be reversed on the opposite end and the train will be taken back to the yard at Oroville to be tied down until the ballast is needed.

  • I miss seeing the caboose on the end of the trains.

  • cool

  • We had two Ballast Trains come thry Red Bluff today, but much longer than this one though. Had two locomotives on the front, and one on the rear.

  • Very hard core with the scanner talk and all!

  • Interesting Scanner talk, also, these are interesting signals and switch's shown here. Seems that UP really likes those SD70M's..
