@emaculate Yeah, I recently went from a Evans EMAD 2 to EMAD ( single ply ), it's an improvement. I would like update my comments on the bass shell and say that it's not so much that it isn't loud, it's that the note is a VERY pure fundamental note - an excellent quality but, there is less of the mid frequency " bloom" that one gets from a thin shell. The low end on these drums is ASTONISHING, as is the volume ( the toms are LOUD ), sustain, sensitivity and tuning range. Easy to tune as well
@sashazindel i ahree... but this kit does seem like its geard more for big band and jazz. I bet alot of old swing drummers blew a load for this one....I play a stage custom and love it.
Not to tear down your assessment of your kit, but a 20" bass drum was never loud enough for me. I've played slingerland, Yamaha maple custom, Gretsch, Tama. I love the feel of that size bass drum more than anything. Have you played it miked up yet ? If so, how'd it sound ? Thanks !!
I really love my Mapex, but damn if PHX aren't the best drums I've ever heard. Too bad I'd need to take out a 2nd mortgage to afford a kit.

Two points:
Notice how Wolfgang sits very high in relation to the drums and also looks like he's exerting very little effort. The two are related.
Second, the Yamaha PHX snare is the best I have ever heard.
That is all.
