In his eight-part (each 30-minute segment is posted separately) oral history interview, writer Earl Hamner talks briefly about his earliest writing credits, for shows such as Today, Wide, Wide World, and The United States Steel Hour. Next, he speaks about writing for the anthology series The Twilight Zone, and discussed each of the episodes he wrote. He recalled the controversy surrounding the television movie Heidi, which he wrote, when it interrupted an important football broadcast. He discusses in detail his experiences as the creator of the drama series The Waltons, and talks about the creation of the program, the cast, and the show's parallels with his own childhood. He also talks about some his later series, including Apple's Way, The Young Pioneers, Falcon Crest, Brewster Place, and Snowy River: The McGregor Saga.

  • I wonder what brand/model of typewriter that is in the background?

  • @Manwithjeep So true, best accent ever.

  • He would be 79 ir 80 here but doesn't seem that old.

  • Great interview.... Is the show re-airing now?

Why dont they play the Thanksgiving & Christmas shows ??

  • He used to do the narration on The Waltons TV show.

  • Nice interview, but quite irritating with that beeping sound in the background.

  • TVLEGENDS, thank you for sharing this story of Earl Hamner. I loved his story on The Waltons.

  • I'm not surprised at all that he recalls the depression years as happy ones. My Mother in law is British and she recalls the war years as happy ones in which she had a lot of fun rushing into shelters avoiding the dreaded "buzz bombs". Odd, but understandable!

  • love listening to this interview, the waltons was one of my favorite shows,it still is.I quit smoking two years ago and my goal was to buy all the cds they made and enjoy watching them when i can..
