The magnificent work of the great organ builders, Casavant Brothers of Quebec. Soundtrack: Bach's Fantasy in G Minor BWV 542 performed by organist, Darren Motise.
I love a good Casavant organ. One of my favorites is the 1972 Casavant at the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in Providence, RI. At four manuals and 125 ranks, it's one of the world's largest tracker-action instruments. Organist at the time it was built: the late great C. Alexander Peloquin.
The Casavants, like most residents of the Canadian Province of Quebec, were French Canadians and their ancestors emmigrated from France to "New France" likely in the 1600's. The Casavant brothers, their father and their father's father were all born in Quebec. They had nothing in particular to do with France-especially after the French Revolution--which was generally regarded by French Canadians as something horrible.
The Warren family claim the Casavant's apprenticed with them
My old church had a Casavant organ from the late 60's. It is certainly not in the French style. In fact, it had an Oberwerk division and some pretty crazy stop names. Some of them don't even appear in the encyclopedia of organ stops.
Notions that Casavant Frere's apprenticed with C.C. for any appreciable time is hearsay. If someone can refer documentation attesting otherwise, I'll recant.
Casavant operated an auxillary manufactory in Michigan in the 1920's--and then closed it down.
The tonal director of Casavant until the late 1950's was an Englishman--Mr. Stoot. He retired due to ill health and Wolfe, Wilhelm, Phelps, Brunzema produced German-like organs until they went Fr. Romantic in the 80's.
