Gerrit Kroesen, chairman Art Committee and coordinator GLOW@TU/e: "We wish to radiate that creative spirits are working at the TU/e with artistic talents. This explains why an anchoring in TU/e research has been provided for most of the works of light art and objects. In this way we show as TU/e that scientific research can be exciting and useful as well as beautiful!

The machine is a Tesla coil. It represents Prometheus, who stole the fire from the gods and gave it to human mortals. This Tesla coil manufactured by TU/e produces bolts of lightning, which of old were only cast 'by the gods'. Molecules of carbon dioxide, ammonia and water are converted by lightning into amino acids, the building blocks of life.
On the windows of the Grand Café an image is projected of chemical reactions in primeval matter by the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS), which is based on results that were found in the famous experiments conducted by Urey and Miller in the 1950s.
