He wanted "Jedi Mind Trick" (these are not the Droids you're looking for) in convincing the opposition.

He got confused and mixed it with "Vulcan Mind Meld" (Spock's trick reading the mind of another).

Claiming he "was actually right" is absurd. He was actually wrong... it doesn't matter to anyone; but lets be honest.

I know you think he must be defended at all times in all things, but he's a grown man; let him accept being wrong once... it might be good for him.

That's not what he meant; it wouldn't be used to persuade someone... he just mixed up a couple things and got it wrong.
