The first in a new range of powerful superconductors which could revolutionise the production of machines like hospital MRI scanners and protect the national grid have been developed by engineers at the University of Cambridge. Professor David Cardwell explains what superconductors are, why we need them, and how he and his team have devised techniques to make them more powerful than ever before.

  • very useful and nice video..

  • Top stuff. Cambridge scientists also created a new method of building up the electrical current (flux pumping) within the material that allows them to create the most powerful superconducting permanent magnets in the world, up to 17 tesla.

  • that was kinda interesting..

  • @Zubinen thanks for that, we really care.

  • Take the red pill

  • DAVID CARDWELL IS A VERY CLEVER MAN AND I WANT TO BE HIS APPRENTICE.

  • If I understood well, this is a way to developp friction-less bearings in vehicles and industries. WOW! this is good to reduce energy losses. I'm really excited to attend engineering then physics thereafter.

  • @Zubinen how random...

  • nice demonstration

  • I'm applying to Cambridge for graduate school for theoretical physics, however my field of interest is not condensed matter physics.
