I'm still working on the 100 thing but this is more important right now.

Warning!!! DST has landed (Daylight Saving Time???). It could give you the DTs (jazz hands) or SAD (Seasonal Adjustment Disorder). mind yourselves.

Us Brits have gone back in time, but WHY?????

On the plus side, we had an extra hour...... then, for that fleeting pleasure, we're plunged into afternoon darkness until February!! WHY??????

Benjamin Franklin, the electrical storm kite flying enthusiast, is famously quoted as saying: 'Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise'.

But, I'm not convinced that getting up in the dark and enduring the same inky blackness after a day's graft can be doing anyone's equilibrium any good.

As my Grandad sang some time after its introduction in 1916:

'Daylight Saving Schemes, shortening our dreams'.

I've gone back in time too for a very personal upload. This is Grandad's song from a time after the last big financial crash in 1929, I think. It's a lovely optimistic ditty about making the best of whatever comes along and, as such, is as relevant in today's austere climate as back then. It's the only song that remains from his repertoire and I wanted to cover it before I stop for good meself.

All of the photos are from at least a century ago. The banjo player is my Great Grandad, Joe. My Grandad favoured the piano and composed for musicals in Dublin. He departed in 1959, a few years before I existed. The words are written out below:

In the world these days there are any ways,
Ways and means of brightening up your lot.
Waves of bright endeavour go rolling on forever,
So they say, but whether or not ....

Broadcast a little happiness and joy will then come rolling along,
Hopes will rise too the skies,
Doubts will drop and troubles flop.
To share a trouble will halve a trouble,
A joy that's shared is a joy that's double.
Broadcast a little happiness and joy will then come rolling along.

Daylight saving schemes shorten time for dreams,
Therefore make the best of what's at hand.
Sunshine's very cheap so just take a peep,
Brighten up, then spread it though the land.

  • What a lovely surprise to listen to Navim singing his grandfather's song... Navim, you definitely posses your grandad's talent and you look like him! :-) It's a very nice song and video! Very enjoyable!

  • @Zinasoul Ah Zina!! Such a pleasure to hear from you. I've not noticed a likeness between us, but I've never really looked for any before. Thanks for the sweet comment. I always look forward to your encouraging words. I wish you a happy, sunny Sunday in Holland. Take care.

  • Broadcasting Happiness Nicely...love the pictures man, i love the old style feel you made musically, as it fits perfectly. Now thinking back with no music playing...Great singing, really good, amazing honestly, broadwayish navim49 old barish style.

  • @damondrydes Cheers amigo. I tried to give it an old style Broadway feel. Glad you picked up on that. You know your stuff.

  • This is really great Nav. I love all the background and all the care and reverence on display here. Great job with the song - it's retro cool. You are a class act my friend. A centurion would never give up ;-)

    Cheers

    Simon

  • @wooddragon45 Much appreciated buddy. Thank you.

  • Touching...and very well done...

  • @navim49 I should have guessed you were a Capricorn. It fits. I suspect you're very cool in real life. PM me if you ever want to talk about whatever. I might even tell you my real name.

  • @TheHawthorne2 Touching words my friends. Thank you. I tried to give the vocals a Raffa touch. It was hard to do. He makes it look effortless!!! The thought of Kate singing is mighty tempting but stopping at 100 seems right somehow.
