SonicProjects OP-X (VM Bundle) compared to a real Oberheim OB-X. It's a dry-dry 1:1 comparison with no effects and no further external processing for an all pure comparison.

The stereo outputs of OB-X and the stereo line outputs of the V-Machine were connected with the same cable to the same A/D converter (Apogee Rosetta).

The used Oberheim OB-X is a 6 voice Rev. 2 model, built in 1979, which has no MIDI. The filters and oscillators in this model are still discrete (no curtis chips).

OP-X in the V-Machine is played completely dry with no effects activated. The used presets and patches are (sometimes they were tweaked a bit to match OB-X):

1: Preset 58 - OB-X Pulse Brass
2: Preset 30 - BJH Echoes
3: Preset 13 - 4-Voice SawSolo
4: Preset 00 - SEM Sweep
5: Preset 56 - OB Deep Strings
6: Preset 04 - OB-Xa Brass
7: Preset 55 - OB Sustained Strings
8: Preset 63 - OB Fat Upsweep
9: Simple Pulse Wave (two oscillators, width: 0)
10: Filtered Pulse (without / with resonance)
11: Saw Unison with Portamento (Porta Det. Active)

In the last example the portamento detune parameter is activated that emulates the slightly deviating portamento times from voice to voice which causes that famous "smear" while gliding.

The Separate Voice Design (SVD) of OP-X also is capable of emulating all further analog deviations between the voices including filters, envelopes and oscillators, which make up the beloved lively and organic sound.

  • I can not put these sounds in the v machine .... can you tell me how to proceed ..... thank you in advance

  • @gunsmoke83460 Do you own the VM Bundle? This is the only way to use the sounds in the V-Machine. Just follow the instructions in the installation guide. The sounds too will be included in the Classic Keys Bundle which will be released very soon. This will also contain other synths like Minimonsta, PPG Wave, VSM and further ones

  • I love both the real OP-X and the VST. They do sound a little different to me though. The VST seems to have less bottom end in my opinion than the real OP-X. It's like the VST has a high pass filter on it. I would be curious to know if anyone else thinks the same.

  • Be aware that this might have to do with the completely different D/A-converters that were used; OB-X in this video was recorded directly over a highend Apogee Rosetta converter while the audio of the VSTi firstly comes over the V-Machines internal audio out which is by no means comparable to a high end converter like Apogee (which costs several times the V-Machine itself) and is not as full in the bass. If you want to have full frequency range use an upper class converter with a stable clock.

  • Hey Ive got an OBX and the wood side pieces are beat to hell. Did you custom make those or buy them. Mine have a rubber strip wrapping around them.

  • These are the original wood sides, I've never bought separate ones; it's dark brown wood with a black plastic strip wrapping around; I've seen a guy once who sells replacement wood sides on ebay, you may check this out

  • that was awesome. thank you for posting

  • That OP-X sounds pretty convincing.Of course, the real synth benefits from having an actual pre-amp, that you can push to get a slightly compressed, meatier sound. Nothing you couldn't help with some good compression on the OP-X output.

    I'm impressed, really.

  • Play Subdivisions

  • I think the VST sounds thinner and sharp when compared. There are a lot more overtones, bottom and colour in the hardware than in the Vst.

  • Not enough difference between the two for me to lay down a wad of cash on the hardware. If I close my eyes then I am completely fooled and the guy on the street would be too. In reality the original might be slightly warmer and smoother but I bet the hardware owners are gutted that the software is jawdroppingly close and that even they could be fooled into believing they are hearing the real thing. Amazing job by SonicProjects, just admit it guys, give credit where it is due.

  • That's perfectly logical. Well explained, and thanks for the great info.
