in early 1997 a carmelite nun, who used to be my choir member, approached me and asked me if I could organize a concert during the centennial celebration of St. Therese of the child Jesus's death. I had no idea who this saint was but I said OK and the MISA (Mary Immaculate Singing Ambassadors, a men's choir) agreed to do it, too. But a few weeks later, I got a letter from the university that I have to come 6 months earlier to Japan for my Japanese language studies before entering the masters program. My flight was on Sept 21 and the concert was on Sept 27. Gina Raakin, my classmate at the conservatory, saved me. She agreed to arrange the music and accompany them live. She and our dean Mrs Suarez (synthesizer), were Protestants but they crossed the sea to help us make this concert a success despite my absence and limited practice time.

A month later, I got a package containing a cassette tape, a recording of the concert and a copy of the program.

A couple of years ago, I was shocked to hear that one of the choir members died from a terrible disease. He was a tenor and my favorite soloist. I wish he remembered St. Therese's words when he was suffering and found comfort in them... and may he rest in peace with her now.

Here's an excerpt of 4 songs that I composed using the poems of St. Therese. God bless us all.
