The Wells Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Matthew Owens, perform Geoffrey Burgon's setting of the Nunc Dimittis, which was made famous by St Paul's Cathedral chorister Paul Phoenix as the opening theme of the BBC drama 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.'

Treble solos by Catherine Hart and Frances Henderson.

[ Text: ]

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people.
To be a light to lighten the gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

  • A lovely, transcendant piece - thank you so much for the posting. As beautiful in its own way as the Paul Phoenix rendition. A performance like this has the ability to touch any soul.

  • @Cyberstudmuffin Thanks kindly for your comment. I'm so glad that a stunning but simple piece of music has the ability to touch so many people.

  • This is quite, quite lovely - a perfect example of the Anglican choral tradition, the best in the world - and I speak as a Roman Catholic.

Thank you for bringing us this wonderful prayer of Simeon.

    Ken.

  • @goldieken Thank you very much for your kind comment, Ken. I see no reason at all as to why we shouldn't be able to appreciate and enjoy music from other traditions-- especially when the music is as beautiful and well-sung as this. I'm glad that others agree.

  • Best version of this song in my opinion, words can't do it justice. Pitty this upload is so quiet :(

  • @PeterGratrex Thanks kindly, and I'm sorry that this and other of my uploads are so soft. I work off of a Macbook, which are notorious for their quiet speakers; but I don't entirely understand why the hardware should impact the volume level of the track, which was a digital download. :[ If anyone knows how to change the volume (apart from listening on headphones), I'd love to know.
