  • @XinBiDe, Well they may have filmed a few different takes with different prices for different markets. I'm not sure, the pricing is odd and the only logical reason I could think of was to make the price round up for the sales tax.

As far as comparing prices from different years it's very easy, there are dozens of inflation calculators on the internet.

  • I recognize that actor. Damn, what other tv shows, movies was he in?

  • IS that a man or a women?

  • willy wonka!!!!

  • vcs forever my friends<3<3<3

  • supply and demand...

  • @JohnQ1127 But sales tax varies from state to state and sometimes even localities, so that can't be the reason, I think.

Also, trying to compare prices by saying "X back then = Y today" is about as relevant as saying 1 USD has the exact same purchasing power as 28 Taiwan Dollars, for example. Within their own countries and contexts, they're truly incomparable.

  • Great advert ... Ha

  • $139.84 in 1981 is roughly $325.83 in 2009 dollars. So this was an expensive machine especially when you consider that the Atari 2600 was hardly new and had been around since 1977-78.

The only thing I can think of for the odd pricing, "18.87, 139.84" would be that you would end up with a round number when you included any sales tax.

  • @igetboredproductions,

I think it was called a "video computer system" in attempt to dupe parents into thinking that an Atari 2600 was partly an educational device instead of an entertainment/gaming system.
