Black Rose of Texas, written and recorded by Dave Alvin from his 2011 album "Eleven Eleven", now available on Yep ROc Records and Amazon

Lyrics...

All the pills you kept beside your bed were never enough to ease your mind
And the men who came then always left, not all of them treated you real kind
You tried booze and God and cigarettes but nothing could keep you from crying
Black Rose of Texas, I hope you found some peace this time

And the honky tonks and punk rock bars, sometimes it felt so good to be alive
Doing the two step across the hardwood floor while telling some wild boy white lies
But the music always had to stop and you had to face the world on your own
Black rose of Texas, I hope you found your way back home

Black rose of Texas,
no one can say you didn't try
Black rose of Texas,
I wish I could have said goodbye

On a train in Arizona as the morning sun was burning in the east
A long distance phone call woke me up from my sleep
Then I watched the desert passing by, replaying sweet and sad memories
Black rose of Texas, I hope this time you're finally free

Black rose of Texas
No one can say you didn't try
Black Rose of Texas,
I wish I could have said goodbye

Black rose of Texas
I hope you found some peace this time
Black rose of Texas
I just wish I could have said goodbye

  • Beautiful song... this alone could bring me back to "country" music after a long hiatus... thanks so much for posting it!

  • @MrKaripie It is a beautiful song written by Dave for Amy Farris who was an extraordinary fiddler and violinist. She was part of his "Guilty Women" group and died in 2009, presumably suicide. Alongside this track, Dave's album is excellent, each and every song. You would be doing yourself a huge favor to buy it.

  • The guitar work, as well as the deeply felt song, is beautiful.

Does anyone have the guitar chords?

  • @MReineck I'm sorry, I do not. Hopefully someone will come along and help you out. Worse case scenario, you could go to his website and send off an email in request. I'll be seeing him in January, can't wait to hear this one live. The whole album as a matter of fact. We'll see how much of it he fits in.

  • Thank you !!! Such a great voice .....

  • @acinom44 You're welcome Monica...his voice has gotten better with age. Glad you liked it
