Here are three ways to think about the three-ball juggling trick, Mills Mess. You might find them interesting. While this isn't intended as a tutorial of the trick, you are free to use
it that way.

Incidentally, on the first of the three I sometimes chop the reverse cascade throws to get them in the right place. That's because I can't do the cross-armed reverse cascade very well, not because the chops are otherwise necessary.

Filmed Dec, 2009.

(This is my first film effort without outside help.)

  • Actually, when you reverse the false shower/windmill, you don't get Mills Mess, but a different pattern that looks a lot like it, but where there is no underarm catch, only an underarm throw. It's called Flo's Mess if I remember correctly. Still, it works for an explanation, but one should remember to make sure the underarm catch is also there as well as the underarm throw.

  • I think the difference arises depending on exactly which moment one chooses to reverse the pattern. If you reverse too early (which I unfortunately did do a couple times, especially earlier in the explanation) the result isn't exactly MM, but if you wait until after the cross-arm catch is made to reverse, it is.

  • Aha! I used to do flo's mess thinking it was mills mess until it was pointed out to me that my mills mess looked weird. I never knew the name for my incorrect mills mess, until now!

    Cheers, Sondre. :)

Oh, and nice video Bruce. I'll certainly use these ideas when teaching mills mess in the future. ;)

  • I have always had a heck of a time trying to teach people Mills Mess. Those are good ways to look at it.
