It wasn't intended to be just historical. It was indented to be, like all kids shows of that era, educational. When the Doctor went into the past it was supposed to be a historical episode, when they went into space or the future it was supposed to be a Scientific episode.

Doctor Who came first didn't it? Well, it was actually intended for it to be a purely historical show. No bug eyed monsters said the producers. That failed with the Daleks coming along. Star Trek was intended to be a sci-fi adventure - therefore you can't compare. And Big Bang is hilarious in my opinion (and I am not an American)
