@mrtheoneandonly83 I should also that I think Mahalia's 1949 version is much better than the 60s one.

Robert Started something good "the caravans." It was from out of the caravan came ledgends and stars such as Rev James Cleveland, Albertina Walker, Bessie Griffin and more. Robert wrote songs like in my home over there, prayer changes things both were performed by Mahalia Jackson. Working on the Road to name but a few.

Robert Anderson's group was known as his Gospel Caravan. There's a great reissue album, "Walking the Road," that includes his recordings for the United label, backed by that group. It's the first set of Caravans. On April 18, 1952, he recorded several sides ending with matrix number 1114. After he left -- according to some reports without paying the women -- they remained in the studio. Matrix number 1115 and 1116 were the first recordings released under the name The Caravans.

Thanks for your input. I have that album titled WORKING THE ROAD, that contains The Lucy Smith Singers, Robert Ballinger, and Sammy Lewis. It's a very nice album.

Mahalia liked this song well enough to record it -- with Robert accompanying her on piano! One of my favorite memories is seeing her blast the song in a Brooklyn church. She also did wonders with Robert's greatest composition, "Prayer Changes Things."

Yes, and I really like her version of "What A Difference" also. I like the later version of "Prayer Changes Things" from Mahalia's album, EVERYTIME I FEEL THE SPIRIT, in which "What A Difference" is also on.
