A quick little tutorial on making "plarn" - plastic yarn made from grocery bags. You can crochet or knit with it to make environmentally responsible upcycled trashion items. Woohoo! Visit http://www.aephemera.net to check out the blog that this video is to be featured in.

The song playing in the background is "Prince Charming" by Jim's Big Ego. http://www.bigego.com.

Lyrics:

I think you better cut all that hair off
throw it out the window
climb down from that tower
flip the wicked witch the finger
ain't no use to wait for him to get you
he's out chasing his own demons
not like you can really blame him
you've got demons of your own

and I hate to be the one to tell you
cause it don't seem so romantic
but that's the way it really goes
and now you know

you're gonna have to be your own prince charming
gonna have to ride your own stallion
gonna have to find your own castle
gonna have to raise your own sail
and there's gonna be a happy ending
but that's only the beginning
this ain't no fairy tale
it's true
it's real
it's you

Cinderella stepped out of her glass slippers
threw down that new apron
put on a pair of old Doc Martens
and stomped right out the door
the prince was still chewing on his bacon
as he hit the open road
said life is full enough of disappointment
to go kissing any toad

and somewhere a band was playing
"to-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra"
you go out and see the world girl
have yourself a ball

you're gonna have to be your own prince charming
gonna have to ride your own stallion
gonna have to find your own castle
gonna have to raise your own sail
and there's gonna be a happy ending
but that's only the beginning
this ain't no fairy tale

you're gonna have to be your own prince charming
gonna have to ride your own stallion
gonna have to find your own castle
gonna have to raise your own sword
and there's gonna be a happy ending
and there's gonna be a happy ending
and there's gonna be a happy ending
it's true
it's real
it's you

  • what are you doing at the last part? i cant tell

  • @SuperBeatleLover Crocheting.

  • icaj19, try and fold the bag so it's straight and cut straight across... good luck!

    shoeshinecs, thanks!

  • PEEPS, you want to try and make the knots kind of tight, so they're not very lumpy. the whole thing is going to have a texture to it, so don't worry too much about it, though.

  • Make sure when you're looping that you're making sure that it's nice and even. If you're crocheting and you get to a place where there's a loop that's uneven, you can un-knot it and re-do it so that it's not bunchy. Good luck!

  • .....wow. plarn is crazy. I might have to start a project. :O

  • That is so cool, I've read instructions on how to make plarn, but I couldn't get a mental image of it . . . seeing this video made it so much easier to understand. I'm going to give that a try in the morning now! Thank you so much! Make myself some plarn and turn it into a reusable shopping bag. We get so many of them from places like Walmart, why not!

  • I have been going crazy about 2 things: how to turn my crochet hobby into money without having to buy expensive yarn, and what to do with all the plastic bags in the house! Now I know! Makes me rethink BYOB just so that I can get more bags to turn into plarn...thanks for the tutorial! very helpful! ^_^

  • Probably not a good thing for me to try making yet, seeing as a I learned to crochet a week ago. But it's on my list now! :D
