Vali Nasr - renowned scholar of political Islam and author of such acclaimed books as "Islamic Leviathan: Islam and the Making of State Power", "Mawdudi and the Making of Islamic Revivalism", and "The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam will Shape the Future" - discusses the political dimensions of fundamentalist Islam. He explains how Islamic fundamentalism is best understood as a set of ideological movements intended to bring about social and political change in various Muslim societies. He then provides a detailed overview of the evolution of political Islam in Pakistan by outlining: (a) the history, ideology, politics, and influence of the powerful Jamaat-e-Islami party founded by Maulana Mawdudi; (b) the impact of major external events such as the Iranian Revolution, the Afghan war against the Soviet Union, and export of Wahabi puritanical Islam by Saudi Arabia; (c) the religious predisposition and domestic political realities of the late Pakistani dictator, General Zia-ul-Haq; and (d) the national security considerations of Pakistani state on account of perceived threats from India. Finally, he makes policy recommendations to the United States for combating the threat posed by fundamentalist Islam in Pakistan and elsewhere. This interview was recorded in October 2002 but is still very relevant today.
