I make a flat wooden flocked plate to put trees on. They define the area of the forest but allow trees to be moved around to make it easier to place models within the woods. The problem of using several sets of trees and designating the area within them as the terrain is that you end up with invisible lines which always end up being controversial when that charge is right on the line. Having a clear template eliminates that.
