Today's top story is Bon Secours Charity Health System receives the 2010 Quality and Patient Safety Award from the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association.

On Monday August 15, 2011 Bon Secours Charity Health System received the 2010 Quality and Patient Safety Award...the result of a concerted effort on the part of the Bon Secours Charity Patient Flow Team.

Over the past two years Bon Secours Community Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital....part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System...made some minor changes to their Emergency Department work flow.

Minor changes that proved big results.

The Patient Flow Team established a protocol that promised patients that they would be greeted immediately on arrival to Bon Secours emergency departments, triaged quickly and seen by a physician within 30 minutes.

During the pilot phase, the percentage of patients who left before being treated dropped from 4 percent to .8 percent.

A panel of 7 judges evaluated all applicants and declared that Bon Secours Charity Health System "demonstrated excellent results...not just effort" according to Northern MetropolitanHospital Association president and CEO Kevin Dahill.

Bon Secours Charity Health System CEO Phillip Patterson was quick to point out that, "We want to be not only the choice of our Hudson Valley community we serve, but we also want to be the best provider of service in New York, the region, if not the whole nation."

Please join us in supporting and congratulating Bon Secours Charity Health System for this major improvement to deliver Good Help to those in need.

In other news, you may recall that it was about 5 years ago that the the Vatican approved the sponsorship transfer of Bon Secours Health System from the Sisters of Bon Secours to Bon Secours Ministries.

Since then Bon Secours Ministries has published their Directional Statement for Bon Secours Health System entitled "A Future Filled with Hope"

Today we thought we might revisit that directional statement. The statement reads:

The call of the Gospel is to proclaim and participate in accomplishing God's hope for the world marked by healing, compassion and liberation. As a ministry of the Church, continuing the healing mission of Jesus and in the tradition of the Sisters of Bon Secours, Bon Secours Health System believes that "the struggle for a more humane world is not an option; it is an integral part of spreading the Gospel".

Faithful to the charism of Bon Secours, Bon Secours Ministries, as sponsor of BSHSI, call all within BSHSI to a future filled with hope reflecting:

A vibrant commitment to care for all entrusted to us, particularly those who are poor and marginalized, with no disparity of service to anyone, through policies, practices and advocacy plans that place the sacredness of the person as primary.

A strong focus on the development of competent and confident healthcare ministers steeped in the richness of Catholic social teaching and the heritage of Bon Secours.

A model of excellent quality care that coordinates the best resources to serve the needs of the patients, residents and families entrusted to us, with a special concern for those who are dying.

A work place that supports and sustains individual and organizational spirituality grounded in a fundamental trust in God's love, creating an environment that enables co-workers to experience BSHSI as a place of ministry and meaning.

An inclusive community of service that encourages diversity and affirms all persons and their unique gifts to bring about the good work God has entrusted to us in responding to the needs of the communities served.

A deepened awareness of the stewardship entrusted to us for God's creation through thoughtful programs to ensure ecological sustainability and our involvement in global ministries.

Together, we can be faithful to our call and the promise we make to be "good help to those in need" in the communities we serve.

Finally, the Bon Secours Health System Children's Artwork Competition has reached its decisions and the 2011 wellness calendar will soon be available for all Bon Secours employees.

The contest drew 55 submissions from children and grandchildren of Bon Secours employees and volunteers.

The kids drew pictures in the target areas of the Healthy Me, Healthy You initiative...eat right...move more...prevent illness....and balance life.

Of the 55 submissions, 12 were selected for the calendar which also includes health related tips, health related websites and much much more.

Right now you are looking at the 12 finalists select for the calendar. September's picture was selected as the cover this year.

The calendars will be distributed across the system for all BSHSI employees soon...so look for more information coming from your local human resources representative.
