Most drills are deliberate. Players skate in defined routes and passes and attacks occur in specific areas. Players do not have to think they just have to execute. Good coaches emphasize the key teaching points and players execute the drill improving their skills and reinforcing: good habits" necessary in the game.
Random Drills are drills in which players have to think and execute according to the situation like in a 1 on 1 mirror drill. Small area game like drills are opportunities to develop Hockey sense executing the skills and tactics in a competitive situation. Practice does not make perfect, perfect and purposeful practice "makes perfect". Good coaches reinforce the "teaching points' and accomplish the purpose of the drills. Poor coaches may conduct a drill and not accomplish the purpose intended. In fact they may be practicing bad habits, not improving and in fact getting worse. Both deliberate and random (game like) drills are essential in every practice. Coaches who plan and run purposeful practices will improve their players performance individually and a team.
